Why Give to Union Theological Seminary?

“It became quite clear that Union ignites a fire
within its students to be a part of radical transformation
and to realize justice in the world. If one desires to be a world changer, this is the place to be!”  — Chris Jones, first-year student

Dear Friends,

“Union ignites a fire.” “Radical transformation.” “World changer.” Strong words from student Chris Jones. But Union students have always spoken out, committing themselves to the betterment of the world around them. Their voices resound from the pulpits of religious institutions, from the lecterns of academia, and from the offices of non-profits, NGO’s and social-justice agencies.

Chris Jones, Valerie Ross and William Critzman — just finishing their first year of study at Union — speak with energy, introspection, hope, commitment and courage. Their words are representative of the Union students of today.

Valerie Ross remarks: “I have begun a journey from merely claiming the faith, reiterating what others claim it to be, to defining the faith, understanding ‘the story’ for myself, in the context of my own personal experience. This liberative road is the ‘one less traveled by,’ and that will make all the difference."

And this from William Critzman: “My first year at Union has taught me that when it comes to standing up for justice and serving a community it's best to expect the unexpected. This year I've learned how important it is to plan well and stay ahead of your work because when the Spirit comes calling, there's really nothing else to do but to stand up and follow. At the end of my first year, I look at the faces of those who will surely be my life's colleagues and see great hope for the leaders we will be as together we discern that Spirit voice calling us all to repair ourselves, our community, and our world.”;

These three students — and their educational and spiritual formation — are at the core of Union’s mission. They are the reason we are here. They inspire us, and we trust they inspire you. They are our future.

Please support Chris, Valerie, William and all our other students as they go forward in their studies and lives of service, by giving generously to the Seminary’s Annual Fund. The Annual Fund provides scholarship funding, faculty support, field study stipends, maintenance monies for our historic campus and so much more that is integral to each student’s experience at Union. Your gift to the 2012 Annual Fund will support the transformative work being done in and by the Union community. Your generous support will help to equip the Union students of today with the tools they need to become the leaders of tomorrow.

In gratitude,

Serene Jones
