Dr. Cláudio Carvalhaes, Marilyn Seven Endowed Chair in Religion and the Arts at Union Theological Seminary in New York City, on being named an Auburn Seminary Barbara Wheeler Fellow!

As a Barbara Wheeler Fellow, Dr. Carvalhaes will conduct research titled Sacred Imagination for Desecrated Times: Arts as Curandería in Theological Education — a study that promises to open new horizons for how the arts can heal and transform theological education.

An earth thinker, theologian, performer, artist, playwright, and native Brazilian from São Paulo, Dr. Carvalhaes brings an extraordinary breadth of vision to his scholarship and ministry. His recent honors speak for themselves: Full Professorship at Union Seminary (Spring 2023), the Honorary Degree Sacrae Theologiae Doctor from Starr King School for the Ministry (Summer 2023), and the award for Most Creative Play at the New York Theater Festival for his play When Wajcha Meets Pachamama (Fall 2023) — all testifying to a scholar and artist who refuses to separate intellectual rigor from creative courage.

This fellowship is a beautiful and fitting recognition of the gifts Dr. Carvalhaes brings to Union, to the field of theological education, and to the world.
