Black Theopraxis: Creation, Snakeology, Salvation, and Community
Through the unique lens of a “Black Theopraxis” framework, participants will examine the creation story, the fall, and salvation history, with a focus on recovering, and reclaiming God’s divine intention. To advance a more impactful leadership model and praxis, participants will also explore the theological tenets of creation, empowerment, and liberation. Facilitated by Rev. Drs. John Kinney and Patricia Gould-Champ, this conversation will challenge us and offer new insights and practices for cutting edge ministry.
Rev. Dr. John Kinney is a theological giant, distinguished seminary administrator, preacher, pastor, educator, and scholar with over four decades of ministry and leadership experience. His leadership and advocacy work have helped shape conversations on race, justice, and faith. Having served as a pastor, academic dean, and advocate for justice, Dr. Kinney is known for his deep commitment to faith, social justice, congregational leadership, and spiritual growth. He received undergraduate and graduate degrees from Marshall University, Huntington, West Virginia and Virginia Union University of Theology in Richmond, Virginia, and his Ph.D. from Columbia University/Union Theological Seminary in New York.
Rev. Dr. Patricia Gould Champ is a respected pastor, scholar, and advocate, committed to empowering communities through faith and service. With a strong foundation in pastoral leadership and theological education, she has dedicated her career to preaching, teaching, and advocating for equity and equality. Dr. Gould-Champ holds advanced degrees in theology and ministry, and has spent over 30 years teaching at the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology, where she is a tenured Associate Professor and Chair of the Black Church Studies Department. She is the founding visionary and former Senior Pastor of the Faith Community Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia, where she served for 25 years.
