BIOGRAPHY
Chanmi Byun is an Assistant Teaching Professor of Psychology and Religion and the Administrative Director of Episcopal and Anglican Studies at Union Theological Seminary. Dr. Byun holds a B.S. from the University of Florida as well as an M.Div. and Th.M. from Presbyterian University and Theological Seminary in Seoul, Korea.
Her scholarly interests lie at the intersection of spiritual care, decolonial studies, religion, and psychoanalysis. Her book-in-progress, Where Is the Bachata in Spiritual Care?: Decolonial Spiritual Care after Religion, grew out of her PhD dissertation. Recognizing the colonial legacy of the category of religion and its implication for spiritual care practices from a decolonial perspective, it explores and imagines decolonial spiritual care after religion through the lens of a genre of social dance called “bachata.”
Dr. Byun has diverse experience in spiritual care and ministry, having worked in Seoul, Guatemala City, and New York City. She is also a candidate in the psychoanalysis licensure program in New York City.
