Biography
Rev. Dr. Eileen Campbell-Reed (she/hers) began her work as Visiting Associate Professor of Pastoral Theology and Care at Union Theological Seminary, New York City, in the fall of 2019. She is also a pedagogy consultant supporting faculty instructors in their teaching practice.
Dr. Campbell-Reed’s previous academic experience includes teaching practical theology, field education, and pastoral care to seminarians and doctoral students; teaching world religions to incarcerated college students in a Tennessee state prison; and facilitating spiritual formation with various groups including women in recovery. She also has extensive experience in ministry coaching and mentoring, program administration, and coaching academic writers. She is a co-chair of the Psychology, Culture and Religion Unit of the American Academy of Religion, member of the Society for Pastoral Theology and the Association of Practical Theology, former editor of the Journal of Pastoral Theology, and current member of the editorial board of the Theology and Practice Series at Brill.
Dr. Campbell-Reed is co-director of the Learning Pastoral Imagination Project, a longitudinal study of ministry following 50 pastors and ministers since 2009. The project is currently funded through the Louisville Institute and is housed at UTS. She is also founder and host of Three Minute Ministry Mentor, a weekly video, blog and podcast providing resources that inform and inspire the practice of ministry. Her new book Pastoral Imagination: Bringing the Practice of Ministry to Life (Fortress, 2021) and its companion Pastoral Imagination Journal explore how ministry is cultivated across time, through embodiment and relationships, and in encounters with the holy.

RECENT COURSES
SPRING 2021, FALL 2021
Students receive practical and theoretical grounding in the fundamentals of responding to common pastoral situations (such as illness, grief, couples and families, crisis, addictions and violence, and self-care), with attention to the impact of social context (race, gender, class). Students develop a theological framework for conceptualizing health and wholeness with reference to their own theological and cultural traditions, and a method of pastoral theological/spiritual reflection.
SPRING 2022
An in-depth exploration of the physical, emotional, sociocultural, and spiritual dimensions of death and dying, and the process of bereavement, through the lenses of pastoral theology, thanatology, and psychology. Students explore the skill and art of ministering to the dying and the bereaved, and develop their own theological framework for understanding and facing terminal illness, life-threatening violence, and death. Topics include pastoral and spiritual care for diverging beliefs about evil, suffering, and life after death, and funerals as pastoral and spiritual care.
FALL 2020
This course explores the literature of embodied and psychological trauma as well as best practices for providing pastoral and spiritual care for people who have experienced trauma. We use cultural narratives (novels, movies, television, and other dramas) that explore the lived experience of trauma, recovery and processes of healing. Students consider the psychological, spiritual and theological dimensions of trauma as well as questions raised by the experiences of personal, social and trans-generational trauma. Students also lay groundwork for the sake of building skills to give appropriate pastoral and spiritual care, including intentional rituals, deep listening, and accompanying survivors of trauma who are working toward healing and wholeness.
