We are delighted to announce that Phyllis Trible ’63, Ph.D., D.D., Union’s Baldwin Professor Emerita of Sacred Literature, will be in Western North Carolina on Friday, August 10.
Dr. Trible will be in the area as part of a daylong conference of progressive Baptist leaders who will be discussing how their heritage has informed their lifetime views on faith and politics. She has graciously agreed to extend her schedule into the evening in order to have an opportunity to further engage this topic with Union alums.
As the organizer of the conference, Roger Sharpe ’95, a former North Carolina State Senator and one our Asheville alumni/ae chapter co-leaders, graciously extends an invitation to all area Union alums to join with Dr. Trible and other special guests at Mars Hill University, roughly 15 miles north of Asheville.
RSVP by Monday, August 6, to Emily Odom, [email protected], with a cc to Roger Sharpe, [email protected]; or call Roger directly at 704-402-2904.
Due to the limited size of the President’s Dining Room, it is important that you RSVP so that we may get an accurate attendance count to accommodate all guests comfortably.
When: Friday, August 10, 5:30*-7:30 p.m. (*Gather at 5:00 p.m. for cafeteria line)
Where: President’s Dining Room, Pittman Cafeteria
Cost: $9.50 per person for dinner; cash or credit card at the door

Directions to Campus: From I-26’s Exit 11 (about 20 miles north of Asheville), take a left at either the stop sign or the traffic light (depending upon your starting point), and go about a mile on 213 (Carl Eller Road) to the next stop light. Go through the light, and pass three pedestrian crossways. After the third pedestrian crossway is the entrance to a parking lot for the Pittman Cafeteria. If that parking lot is full, continue another 200 feet on your way down 213, and take a left after the next pedestrian crossway (the 4th) onto Dormitory Drive. There is a big parking lot with two entrances immediately on your left, from which one can see the stairway up to Pittman Dining Hall. Please see also the university’s “Location, Direction, & Maps” page
