This two-day class will explore theologies of fundraising and the role of money in the Bible and in our own personal and communal lives. Building on this foundation we will turn to concrete necessary skills to build a robust fundraising program in churches and religious organizations. We will explore techniques relating to annual giving and stewardship campaigns, face to face solicitation, crowdsourcing and event management.

With over 15 years of executive leadership experience in the religious nonprofit arena, Mieke guides people and institutions to remove barriers in order to live into their dreams. She is a detail-oriented project manager and brings extensive development, fundraising, administrative, and supervisory knowledge, having successfully begun multiple programs and organizations. She is a consultant with religious and non-religious organizations and congregations.

Prior to founding Vandersall Collective, she got her start as a consultant by housing many of her initial clients at Wingo, NYC, a boutique fundraising design studio. Mieke’s work with clients is comprised of the implementation of major donor programs, online crowdsourcing campaigns, grant writing and grantmaking procedures, website writing and development, communication strategies, board development, event planning, worship planning, and organizational capacity-building.

In addition, Mieke encourages nonprofits, congregations and religious leaders as they work to fund their ministries.

Martin Duus, Vice President for Development, Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York, has been a practicing development professional since 1981. Martin has served Union since the summer of 2015, running development, alumni/ae relations and the leadership of the Campaign for Union.

For the past 35 years, he has moved around the world of NYC cultural institutions, including the Staten Island Children’s Museum; the New York Public Library ($357 million Campaign in 1986); New-York Historical Society; and The Frick Collection, where he and the Director executed a $35 million endowment campaign, while he built the new external affairs department.

Post-Frick in 2006, he went on to Eyebeam Art+Technology Center in Chelsea, NYC, an urban art colony for emerging artists on fellowships and residencies. He returned to the museum world as VP for Development at the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI), executing a $50 million public-private campaign to establish a new programming model for NYSCI. Then, the world of consulting beckoned with a short stint as COO of Innovative Philanthropy in NYC, ultimately segueing to CCS as a senior campaign director. A native of Philadelphia, he has lived in the greater NY area since 1970. He earned his BA in Behavioral Sciences with a religion minor at Drew University and an MA in Nonprofit Management from The New School.
