Trailblazers 2018 | Honoring and Celebrating Union’s Black Alumni/ae

Trailblazers 2018 celebrates the 25th anniversary of the publication of the groundbreaking work, Sisters in the Wilderness, by Delores Williams’, Paul Tillich, Professor Emerita of Theology and Culture, with four Friday evening worship services. Below is a list of dates and featured preachers.

Worship services will begin at 7:00 p.m. No RSVP is required.

About Rev. Dr. Emma Jordan Simpson
The Rev. Dr. Emma Jordan-Simpson is the Executive Pastor of The Concord Baptist Church of Christ, Brooklyn, NY. She is the sixth of seven children born to a single mother in Newark, New Jersey. The beneficiary of programs like the first generation of Head Start and free after-school programs run by local churches in Newark, she knew early on that she wanted to live a life of service. She preached her first sermon at the age of 17 at House of Prayer Episcopal Church in Newark. She attended public schools in Newark and graduated from Arts High School in 1981 before going on to Fisk University in Nashville, TN as a “first-generation” college student. (Full Bio)

About Minister Candace Simpson
Minister Candace Simpson is a Brooklyn native, a sister, a writer, and an educator. She is also the site coordinator of the Concord Freedom School, a literacy-based social justice education program for children in Bedford- Stuyvesant.  She recently graduated from Union Theological Seminary in New York, where she wrote her thesis on community controlled programming, Womanist ethics, and Freedom School. She weaves her passions for teaching, ministry, and community organizing for the ultimate aim of building more loving and sustainable spaces. Candace enjoys writing and has appeared as a regular contributor at the Black Women’s Blogging Collective, For Harriet.

Currently, Minister Simpson serves on a team of Faith and Justice Educators at the Seminar Program of the United Methodist Women.
It is Candace’s philosophy that Heaven is a Revolution that can happen right here on Earth.
