This three-day intensive sexuality education training focused on approving the participant to facilitate Our Whole Lives and its companion material, Sexuality and Our Faith, with children. Our Whole Lives was created by the United Church of Christ and the Unitarian Universalist Association and provides facts about anatomy and human development, but also helps participants clarify their values, build interpersonal skills, and understand the spiritual, emotional, and social aspects of sexuality.
This course promotes the values of responsibility, relationship, and respect. Participants will learn how to help children and families explore their values, learn about physical, social and emotional changes of puberty, explore gender, attraction, consent, decision-making and more—all within the framework of faith.
This training is important in the life of the modern church. Sexuality raises personal, communal, and theological issues for every religious community. This training will provide opportunities for the participants to discern what their personal sexual values are while preparing to take on the questions of their community. It includes some personal exploration of how past sexual experiences inform current perspectives on sexuality.
Participants will need to familiarize themselves with the Our Whole Lives curriculum for the group(s) they intend to teach prior to attending the training. These include: Our Whole Lives for Grades K-1; Sexuality and Our Faith for Grades K-1; Our Whole Lives for Grades 4-6, 2nd Ed.; Sexuality and Our Faith for Grades 4-6, 2nd Ed.; and It’s Perfectly Normal.
The Parent Guide for Our Whole Lives Grades K-1 and 4-6 is currently under revision and the second edition will be available for purchase this spring.
