Applications are now open for the 2019 seminar of the German-American Bonhoeffer Research Network which will meet at Union Theological Seminary in New York, June 9-16. Applications may be submitted now, and no later than October 15, 2018.
Sponsored by Union Theological Seminary’s Bonhoeffer Chair in Theology and Ethics, and funded by the government of the Federal Republic of Germany, this program selects five American and five German early career scholars for a week-long seminar. Each participant will be expected, in advance of the seminar in New York (by April 15, 2019), to distribute a paper representing their own research-in-progress and to read the papers of the other participants. During the seminar at Union, participants will discuss each other’s research. After the seminar, participants will belong to a growing Network that provides opportunities for ongoing research discussion online.
The first cohort of the Network met at Union Theological Seminary, New York, in June 2017. A second group of ten early career scholars met in Berlin in July 2018. A third group will be chosen for the 2019 seminar, to be held again at Union.
Early career scholars means doctoral students who are at the dissertation stage, and those with completed doctorates who are in their first academic appointment or working on their Habilitation. Applicants of German and American nationality, wherever they may be studying or teaching, are eligible to participate. Previous unsuccessful applicants are welcome to re-apply. Most costs of travel, accommodation, and meals are covered by the project, so expenses to participants will be minimal.
The leaders of the seminar are Professor Christiane Tietz, University of Zurich, and Professor Michael DeJonge, University of South Florida. The Project Director is Professor Clifford Green, Bonhoeffer Chair Scholar at Union Theological Seminary.
Applications must include: CV (listing conference papers, publications, lectures); a two-page statement describing the applicant’s Bonhoeffer research-in-progress which he or she wants to discuss in the seminar; a writing sample related to Bonhoeffer research such as a dissertation proposal or chapter, or a published article; and a confidential letter of recommendation from the academic advisor or supervisor of the research.
