Jim Hayes, an indispensable Union Theological Seminary (UTS) mainstay for nearly 40 years, died in a North Carolina nursing home on April 14, 2023 at the age of 80. As per his wishes, there are no funeral or memorial services.
Jim first came to work in the Registrar’s Office in 1968, and later he was appointed as the Dean of Academic Administration. He was a model administrator as well as the institutional memory of Union. With loyalty, devotion, and kindness, he administered Union’s academic programs with wisdom and grace. Deeply respected and loved, he was a mentor to many who worked with him and a friend to those who knew him.
UTS President Serene Jones shared, “Jim was an extraordinary administrator who was universally admired and respected by our students and all our colleagues. He will be missed but his incredible legacy lives on through the many many lives he touched while at Union.”
The Union community mourns this loss and Jim Hayes will be missed immeasurably by all who knew him.
