Prominent Climate Scientist Katharine Hayhoe to Speak at Moyers Lecture at Union Seminary

NEW YORK, NY—Katharine Hayhoe, a climate scientist, a professor at Texas Tech University, evangelical Christian, and a TIME 100 Most Influential People honoree, will give the Sixth Annual Judith Davidson Moyers Women of Spirit Lecture on April 13th at 6:30pm at Union Theological Seminary in New York. In 2014, she was named one of Foreign Policy’s 100 Leading Global Thinkers and in 2015 she was named one of the Huffington Post’s 20 Climate Champions. Hayhoe, with her husband Andrew, a pastor, wrote A Climate for Change: Global Warming Facts for Faith-Based Decisions (2009).

“I am honored to have Dr. Katharine Hayhoe, who so naturally integrates her deepest intellectual, moral, and theological convictions with concrete action in the world, speak here at Union Seminary,” said Union Theological Seminary President Serene Jones. “In order to battle climate change, we need a broad coalition of people from every theological and political perspective to demand meaningful action. Dr. Hayhoe’s work is crucial in this effort.”

Hayhoe’s lecture comes after Union Theological Seminary’s announcement that it is divesting its $105 million endowment from fossil fuels. Union Theological Seminary is also home of The Center for Earth Ethics led by Karenna Gore, whose mission is to work with people of faith and people of conscience to create a new paradigm based on the sustained well being of all people and our planet.

“Now in its sixth year, I’m very pleased to welcome Dr. Katharine Hayhoe to the Women of Spirit lecture,” said Judith Davidson Moyers. “Dr. Hayhoe has a wonderfully powerful voice that seamlessly integrates sincere faith with scientific evidence. I’m eager to hear her address.”

Union Theological Seminary is located at 3041 Broadway at 121st Street, New York, NY 10026. If you are interested in attending, please register by emailing Joey Longley at [email protected] or calling (419) 953-5495.
