Union Theological Seminary President Serene Jones released the following statement after President Obama nominated Chief Judge Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court

“President Obama has done his job. Now the Senate needs to do theirs. Considering Judge Garland is the right thing to do. The Senate does not get to decide when a president’s term is over; the Constitution has already decided that. Senators should meet with Judge Garland, hold a confirmation hearing, and move on an up or down vote. At the beginning of an already rancorous campaign season, this is the time that the Senate can show strong moral leadership by working to heal the divides in our nation instead of driving us further apart.

The  Rev. Dr. Serene Jones is the 16th President of the historic Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York. The first woman to head the 179-year-old interdenominational seminary, Jones occupies the Johnston Family Chair for Religion and Democracy.
