Serene Jones Releases Statement on SCOTUS Marriage Equality Ruling
Today, Serene Jones, President of Union Theological Seminary, released a statement on the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize same sex marriage in all 50 states.
“Today, I rejoice as the Supreme Court has affirmed the inherent dignity of gay and lesbian relationships. This decision makes our country a more safe, welcoming, and inclusive place, indeed a more perfect Union. Today, I think of friends from Oklahoma who 40 years ago would never have imagined that they too could get married like everyone else. And still, marriage is not the end of the struggle for full equality for the LGBTQI community. When 40% of homeless youth are LGBTQI and transgender women of color are at much greater risk of violence, we are not truly equal. Nothing short of a coalition that includes every race, class, orientation, gender identity, and religion will bring about true equality for the LGBTQI community and every marginalized group in our country. Praise God!”
