Statement on Jersey City Kosher Market Attack

We denounce the targeting of Jews in the recent attack on the JC Kosher Supermarket in Jersey City, and mourn the lives of those who were killed. We stand in solidarity with our Jewish students, staff, faculty, neighbors, and the wider Jewish community and recognize the burden of anxiety that is intensified with each horrific attack.

Antisemitic violence and rhetoric are on the rise, occurring with disturbing and increasing frequency. It is vital that we recognize and combat this form of bias and increasing violence that has a long, deep history in our nation and world. We must also acknowledge the interconnectedness of this form of violence with white nationalism, xenophobia, religious supremacy, hate speech, racist ideology, and other forms of bias.

As a historically progressive Christian seminary with an increasing commitment to interreligious engagement, we call on leaders from all religious traditions to come together and unequivocally condemn such violence. We acknowledge with gratitude the leadership shown by many Christian traditions in repenting for the scourge of anti-Jewish teachings that have distorted Christian theology and had tragic consequences for Jews.

Union stands committed to the principles of embracing what binds us together, honoring the value of diversity, and advocating for the flourishing of all people. We must not become inured to hateful acts of violence. Instead, we are reminded that we are called to love one another, and during this difficult time we hold the Jewish community close in our hearts.
