On Friday, October 5 at 10:00 am, during the ReUnion weekend, Union will host a memorial service for the Rev. Dr. Katie Geneva Cannon. Rev. Dr. Cannon’s foundational contributions to the field of womanist theology, and Christianity more broadly, scarcely need an introduction. In 1974, she became the first black woman ordained in the Presbyterian Church. In 1983, she became the first black woman to earn her Ph.D. from Union, where she developed and deepened the transformative approach to Christian womanist ethics that would define her career and ministry.

Books like Black Womanist Ethics and Katie’s Canon: Womanism and the Soul of the Black Community continue to be seminal works in our field, and required reading for anyone who thinks about God, what it means to live in community, and how to lift up truths that have been ignored for far too long.

On October 5th, we invite you to join us in celebrating her life and mourning her death in community.
