So Help Me God: Faith and the Fight for a Progressive Future
Join us this Friday, March 26 at 12:30 p.m. ET for a conversation between Union President Rev. Dr. Serene Jones and Congressman Emanuel Cleaver (MO) for the first installment of our latest series “So Help Me God: Faith and the Fight for a Progressive Future.”
The series will bring together leading policymakers — including Rep. Ritchie Torres (NY) and Union alumnus Senator Raphael Warnock ’94, ’06 (GA) — with Union leadership to discuss some of the most pressing issues of our time. Throughout the series, we will discuss the rise of the religious left and its power to shape policy making going forward.
On Friday, Rep. Cleaver, a United Methodist pastor, and President Jones will look at some of the most hotly contested policy issues of today — including affordable housing and universal basic income — through a lens of faith.
Rep. Cleaver’s religious beliefs have long shaped his career in politics. He recently drew national headlines when he used a prayer on the first day of Congress to call attention to America’s religious diversity and uttered the phrase “Amen and A-woman” to show his support for female political leaders. He is also a dedicated champion of affordable housing, having successfully co-authored the largest sweeping reform bill on housing programs in 20 years.
