Hastings Hall Renovation Project
Demolition work continues. Window abatement has wrapped. The contractors anticipate the red asbestos disposal container on 122nd St. to be removed by the middle of next week, possibly as early as today.
While the primary abatement work is complete, during the course of demolition the construction team discovered an unforeseen condition in an isolated shaft on the interior of the building that will have to be abated. The condition will be addressed in a separate permit and mobilization requiring a much smaller crew to address. That work is expected to begin the next couple of weeks and completed by the end of September. The material from this work will be contained according to regulations and hauled away from the building daily via packer trucks designed for this work. All state and city regulations and safety procedures set by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Department of Buildings (DOB), including air monitoring, will be followed.
Regular work hours are Monday-Friday from 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

April 30, 2019: Union’s Hastings Hall renovation sets MWLBE goals
Union Theological Seminary (Union) has contracted with Consigli Construction to oversee the Hastings Hall renovation. For this project, in line with the seminary’s social justice mission, Union has established, with Consigli, workforce and subcontractor goals to recruit, and provide opportunities for minority workers and Minority-owned, Women-owned and Locally-based Business Enterprises (MWLBE).
Union’s workforce goal, which is based on total project hours not the number of employees, is 30 percent minority worker and 5 percent female worker. The goal for subcontractors/suppliers/vendors is 15 percent MWBE and 5 percent LBE of the total amount of awarded contracts. For this particular project, the local based businesses are expected to come from within the immediate area, specifically the three zip codes within Morningside Heights. By establishing these best faith effort goals, Union affirms its commitment to ensuring underrepresented business owners and workers will be able to participate in and benefit from the campus renewal project.
Another goal of the project is to develop a construction skills training program for five local area residents. The program gives the selected individuals an opportunity to work alongside seasoned trade workers for the Hastings project, and for future construction projects with Consigli. Preference will be given to residents within the Morningside Heights zip codes 10024, 10025 and 10027.
Consigli has hired an area resident, Nzingha Crusoe, as Diversity/Community Outreach Coordinator to assist in making best faith efforts to meet these goals. Crusoe is a local community leader and organizer, with project management experience.
In addition, Union is partnering with Consigli to host a job fair where local laborers will have the opportunity to apply for positions with the project’s subcontractors as well as the construction skills training program. The job fair will be held on Friday, June 14 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Abyssinian Baptist Church, 132 Odell Clark Place (formerly W 138th Street) in Harlem.
