6/26/20: Campus Renewal Update
Hastings Hall Renovation Project
6/11/20: Local Law 11 Update (Claremont Ave.)
Over the past year, Union Theological Seminary has been conducting phased work to comply with the City of New York’s Local Law 11 that calls for the restoration and safety of the historic campus building facades.
Beginning next week, the next phase of this work is expected to commence on the Claremont Ave. side of the campus. This includes 80 Claremont and James Chapel/James Tower. This work will be completed using bucket lifts, rather than scaffolding for the lower buildings, to allow workers to make repairs, including replacing worn out mortar joints, patching areas, and replacing stones if necessary. The repair work requires the use of handheld chipping hammers and will be noisy. Work hours will be 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
We anticipate the Claremont Ave. phase to last approximately 4 weeks, but is highly dependent on the weather.
Any questions should be directed tothe Union Communications Office, [email protected]. Thank you for your patience as we work to meet the NYC building requirements.
4/20/20: Hastings Hall Work Resumes
According to the recent State of New York Executive Order [ 202.6] – which deems construction supporting public and private schools essential – the Hastings Hall renovation project is exempt and work has resumed. The full project scope (residential floors and utility plant) has been reviewed by New York City and the State of New York, and been found acceptable to continue.
Consigli Construction has resumed work on all floors of the building and is following strict health and safety protocols, including monitoring high traffic areas to enforce social distancing, instituting a second shift to help ease worker congestion, additional handwashing stations, and professional site cleaning. The Department of Buildings has completed multiple inspections to review the health and safety protocols and the site has passed each inspection. Consigli has also made it clear to all workers that continuing with the project is strictly voluntary and no one is being compelled to work.
3/30/20: New Hastings Project COVID-19 Update
UPDATE 4/6/20: We received approval from the State and DOB to continue work on the utility plant within Hastings.
On Friday, March 27, NY Governor Andrew Cuomo issued updated guidance for Empire State Development pertaining to construction in the state. Per the update, “essential construction may continue and includes roads, bridges, transit facilities, utilities, hospitals or health care facilities, affordable housing, and homeless shelters.”
As a result of this new guidance, construction on the residential floors of Hastings Hall will be suspended immediately, until further notice. The work on the utility plant (mechanical, electrical and plumbing) in the cellar will continue in order to transfer the campus, including McGiffert Hall, from its current temporary systems to permanent utility systems as soon as possible.
Consigli Construction is notifying all workers of this change, as well as making sure all are aware that work on the utility plant is voluntary. Any worker who feels their health is at risk or does not feel comfortable continuing to work during this time, will not be required to report to work. Consigli will continue with their detailed cleaning procedures within the work site, as outlined in our March 26 statement.
3/26/20: Hastings Hall COVID-19 Update
March 26, 2020
The Hastings Hall renovation project continues and Union is appreciative of the care and safety measures taken for, and by, the workers. The project not only consists of the renovation of the living spaces, it also includes a full replacement of the utility infrastructure (mechanical, electrical and plumbing) for the entire campus. The utility plant for the campus is located in the cellar of Hastings. Presently the campus, including McGiffert residence hall which is currently home to about 200 residents, is being supported by temporary systems, and crews are working to install and connect the new, permanent utility systems as soon as possible. This work and the employ of skilled trades deems this project essential by the state.
Consigli Construction, who is leading the project, has instituted detailed protection measures and protocols including the following:
- Installed additional hand washing stations and supplies (restocked 5 times a week)
- Contracted with a new portable john company with servicing 5 times a week
- Disinfecting of common areas, elevator buttons, stair rails, door knobs, faucet handles 3 times a day
The health of workers is observed and anyone who is sick is asked to refrain from coming to work, and must self-quarantine for 14 days or have a cleared note from a medical professional before they may return.
